What Does “Built Around Your Need. Not the Engagement.” Actually Mean?

At Krieger Scientific, “Built around your need. Not the engagement.” means our team organizes around what a client actually needs, not around a fixed service package we’re trying to sell. A related principle, “We meet you where you are,” means we scope every engagement to the client’s actual ask, whether that’s a single, well-defined task or a full program, rather than forcing every client into the same model.

I write a lot of marketing copy for a living, and I know exactly what marketing speak sounds like. Both of these lines could easily read that way out of context. They don’t hold up that way once you’ve actually watched them work.

Where “Built Around Your Need” Came From

This wasn’t written by a branding committee. It came out of more than three decades Joe Morwald has spent in this industry, listening to what clients actually ask for and watching how often the market answers with something else. Most firms prefer standardized pricing and off-the-shelf service packages, and it’s easy to see why. They’re simpler to quote, simpler to sell, and simpler to deliver. Building an engagement around a specific need is harder to scope and harder to put a price on. But a standard package leaves many clients either coming up short or paying for more than they wanted. As Joe puts it, “We’re not in it because it’s easy. We’re in it because it’s hard.”

The standard model shows up in a familiar way on the client’s side. One company commissions the equipment. Another qualifies it. A third calibrates it. Each of them does their piece well. And somewhere in the middle of all that, the customer becomes the one coordinating schedules, chasing documentation, and managing the very vendors they hired to make their lives easier. This is good for some, maybe many, but for those looking for efficiency and time savings, cost savings, and true value-add, an integrated solution may be the answer.

In that model, nobody owned the whole picture. The customer did, by default, because nobody else would. While the customer is ultimately responsible for regulatory compliance, they often want to delegate execution with confidence and avoid micromanaging or sweating the small stuff. They want to hire accountability, confidence, and reliability.

That’s the actual problem Krieger was built to solve. Not “we offer more services than the next guy.” We built the company around the need itself, so whoever the client hires is accountable for the outcome, whether that’s one task or an entire program, not just for whichever piece of paperwork got signed.

The Second Principle: We Meet You Where You Are

Here’s where it gets more specific, and where I think the real proof lives.

Some of the RFPs that come into Krieger are from organizations that know exactly what they need. They have a need or gap. They can name it. A new piece of equipment needs to be qualified before it goes into service, on schedule, done well, nothing more complicated than that. They are not looking for a consulting engagement. They are not interested in someone coming in, assessing their whole asset management program, and telling them everything they’re doing wrong before they’ve even asked for that.

Other prospective clients come to us in the opposite position. They know something is off across their asset lifecycle, but they don’t yet have the internal expertise to define exactly what “fixed” looks like. They want a partner who can assess, design, and build a program with them from the ground up.

Krieger can do either, or everything in between. We can calibrate an instrument, validate a process, write the qualification documents, provide a quality engineering review, spec out new equipment, move a lab, or design an approach to implementing a new asset management program. That’s not a hedge. It’s the actual model.

Why This Isn’t Marketing Speak

Most firms in this space are built around a package. You either buy the big program or you don’t fit their model well. Your spend is too small for many large firms to bother with; they target whale accounts, not small fish, and many large Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and multiproduct service providers do the same. A firm that’s genuinely built for full-program consulting often struggles to say yes to “just move these four pieces of equipment to the new building” because that’s not the shape of what they sell. And a firm built for narrow, transactional service work usually isn’t equipped to design a program from scratch, because that was never their core competency either.

We’re not pulling a pre-built program off a shelf and asking a client to fit inside it. OEMs often offer a “Canned Solution,” one size fits all. Krieger is looking at the actual need, the actual gap, and building the engagement around that. Sometimes that’s one capability. Sometimes it’s several. Sometimes it’s ongoing. The scope follows the need, not the other way around.

I’ve spent the last several months building marketing materials and proposal responses around this exact idea, and the more RFPs I help the team work through, the more I notice how rarely other firms in this space can genuinely say the same thing and mean it.

What This Looks Like in Practice

A client who needs equipment decommissioned ahead of a site closure gets decommissioning support from people who also understand the compliance and documentation requirements, without being sold a broader program they didn’t ask for. That is not to say we stay silent. We will offer suggestions and opportunities for the client to continuously improve if we have the opportunity to share.

A client who knows something is wrong but can’t yet name it gets a real assessment, a real conversation, and a program built around what that assessment actually finds, not around a template.

Same company. Same founding principle. Two very different starting points, met exactly where they are.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does “Built around your need. Not the engagement.” mean?

It means Krieger Scientific organizes its work around what a client actually asks for or needs, rather than trying to force a fixed service package that was never requested. Whatever the scope, Krieger is accountable for the outcome.

What does “We meet you where you are” mean at Krieger Scientific?

It means Krieger scopes each engagement to the client’s actual need, whether that’s a narrowly defined task like qualifying a single piece of equipment or a full asset management program built from the ground up, rather than requiring every client to fit one model.

Does Krieger Scientific only take on large, full-program engagements?

No. Krieger takes on both narrowly scoped engagements, such as equipment relocation, decommissioning, or calibration support, and full asset management program development, depending on what the client actually needs.

How is Krieger’s engagement model different from a typical consulting firm?

Many firms are built around a single type of engagement, either broad consulting or narrow transactional service work, and struggle to flex outside that model. Krieger’s model is built around the need or gap itself, which allows it to scale up or down to match the client’s actual need.
