I have been hearing the same question everywhere lately. At conferences, on LinkedIn, in client conversations. How is AI changing life sciences compliance?

My answer usually surprises people.

It is not. Not in the way most people think.

The real question is not whether AI will replace experienced compliance professionals. It is whether professionals who use AI intelligently will replace those who do not. That is a very different question, and it is the one that actually matters. 

What AI Is Actually Good At

If you have not used artificial intelligence yet, you are working harder than you need to. AI is a real tool with real value, and I am not interested in pretending otherwise.

But AI is not replacing compliance expertise. It is replacing the friction that keeps experienced people from spending more time using that expertise. Searching. Formatting. Hunting for information buried in a regulatory database. Repetitive documentation. Administrative work that has nothing to do with judgment and everything to do with time.

At Krieger, that shows up in concrete ways. Recording a facility walkthrough and letting AI organize the observations into a structured draft. Searching FDA enforcement history in minutes instead of hours. Summarizing a meeting so nothing gets lost between the conversation and the documentation. Connecting information across projects that would otherwise live in separate files, separate memories, and separate people’s heads.

None of that replaces the work. It clears space for the work that actually requires a person who knows what they are looking at.

What AI Cannot Do

Here is where I get protective, because I have started seeing the limits of this technology treated carelessly, and it bothers me.

AI can tell you what an FDA guidance document says. It cannot tell you what matters most in this facility, on this project, with this client. That distinction is not small. It is the entire job.

I have seen a fair number of AI-generated posts on calibration lately, and most of them get it wrong in one of two directions. Either the content is dumbed down to the point of being technically meaningless, or it tries to sound sophisticated and ends up missing the standard’s actual regulatory purpose. Great graphics. Confident language. Wrong.

Calibration is a discipline of precision and accuracy, where the process matters as much as the result. When content gets the fundamentals wrong, it does not just look bad. It misleads people trying to learn, and undervalues the calibration technicians, specialists, and engineers who have spent years earning the judgment that AI cannot replicate. AI has never performed a calibration in the field. It has only processed one in a virtual world. Those are not the same thing, and pretending otherwise does real damage to an industry that depends on getting this right.

Read the ISO standards. Understand the actual definitions of calibration, verification, adjustment, and traceability. Too many people managing calibration programs today could not tell you what calibration actually means. The number of people who genuinely understand it is small. Value them, because everything depends on getting it right.

What We Actually Believe

We do not use AI at Krieger because it is fashionable. We use it because it helps us deliver better work for our clients. Faster turnaround on facility reports. Sharper preparation before we walk into a client site. More defensible recommendations because the supporting research happened in minutes instead of days.

The goal is for the technology to disappear. Our clients should not notice that we are using AI. They should notice that the answers come faster, the reports are stronger, the preparation is tighter, and the recommendations hold up under scrutiny. That is what good technology does. It gets out of the way of good judgment instead of trying to replace it.

Thirty-five years in this industry taught me that the original AI (Actual Intelligence), the kind built on experience, defensible standards, and a genuine understanding of what a regulation is actually protecting against, will always outperform a chatbot’s best guess. Artificial Intelligence has earned a real place in how we work. It has not earned, and will not earn, the trust we place in the people who know what they are looking at.

That is the difference. And it is the only question about AI that actually matters.
